Thanks for your response. Twitter can be ...David,
Thanks for your response. Twitter can be a difficult medium to deliver tone and all that, although with 280 characters, it is a bit easier.

I think your examples reflect an implicit bias--that you would prefer for SSHRC to be SSRC since you don't seem to like philosophy and maybe other humanities. Maybe I am wrong, but the examples you pick out are suggestive.

I do think the tax payer and the government deserve explanations about what the government is spending, but a key part of that explanation needs to be that basic research is important and research into seemingly bizarre topics can lead to breakthroughs. Constraining our research into that which is marketable tomorrow is a bad way to foster the public goods of understanding and knowledge creation.Steve Saidemanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09881915512311951902noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446351548038522890.post-82526834894107495712017-11-17T11:49:46.804-05:002017-11-17T11:49:46.804-05:00Good post, professor! I think that would be a dumb thing to do for any government.

Still: a recipient of any federal grant, be it to build a new sewer, fix a snowmobile trail, or some money for a masters project ought to expect questions from a non-specialist/journalist about they the sewer, snowmobile trail, or masters project is worth of that funding. And that's what I'm doing today and next week!

Also: If you found the two tweets cited here "annoying" maybe these tweets from my feed less so:
https://twitter.com/davidakin/status/931360228708311040
https://twitter.com/davidakin/status/931359665278947329
And finally, here's what I learned probably as a result of offending people with that first annoying tweet:
https://twitter.com/davidakin/status/931502664793276416

Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10872819763056609107noreply@blogger.com
