Canadians are Bad Canadians

In my time here in Canada, I have long wondered if Canadians are more interested in the Super Bowl or the Grey Cup (the CFL final).  At least for the 2012-2013 winter, the answer is .....

The Super Bowl:
Super Bowl XLVII drew 7.33 million Canadian viewers Sunday night to CTV and RDS, the second largest-ever NFL championship game on TV sets here.
That made last night's telecast the most-watched TV show in Canada this year. Hollywood Reporter
The Grey Cup only reached 5.8 million Canadians.  Of course, the Stanley Cup does far better up here, but in football, four downs > three and all the rest.  Given that the Canadians are watching purely for the game (since the ads are almost entirely repeats of long-running lousy ads, compared to the new, sometimes interesting American ads shown on American networks), this is impressive.

Just a bit of Canadiatrivia.

  1. The Super Bowl airs on CTV.

The Grey Cup is broadcast on TSN.

In short, those numbers don't mean what you think they mean.

  2. Interesting, but then why would that be? I also wonder how many sets carry CTV vs carrying TSN. These days, I cannot imagine that the gap is that big. Hmmm, requires more thought. Thanks!

  3. "... but then why would that be?"

    Simultaneous substitution requirements.
