International Hacking and Guaranteed Grants

Fascinating story about a team of Toronto scholars helping to reveal a Chinese group of hackers who penetrated Indian security. My reactions:
  • Not surprised at all that China is implicated in another hacking/spying effort.  This is likely to be a continuing story for quite some time.
  • Interdependence of security is much tighter than I thought--some of the secrets that were captured by the hacking spies and by the Toronto group involved travel of NATO officials through India on the way to Afghanistan.  So, as one of the folks interviewed put it, your secrets are only as secure as the weakest link.
  • The Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto is not going to have to worry much the next time it has to apply for funding from Toronto or from any grant agency.  Its relevance has been identified across the frontpage of the NY Times and in the highest levels of governments around the world.  Well done.
