Yes, Canada has the best average salary for professors, before taxes. Which is a significant caveat when comparing to the US but not to European countries. I am not leaving McGill solely because Quebec universities pay significantly less than the rest of Canada, but, of course, it does not hurt.
The funny thing is I took a pay cut to come here, as the US dollar was worth much more than the Canadian dollar back in 2002. But the combination of furloughs and cuts in the US and changes in exchange rates (plus no housing bubble up here) meant that the move back then was well-timed indeed. We tend to buy high and sell low due to circumstance, but we definitely had good timing for the big move to Canada. And we are getting out of Quebec with the Parti Quebecois not yet back into power.
Again, I didn't move to Canada because of the promise of higher wages, but I cannot possibly complain now. Well, about that anyway.
