Just came back from seeing Godzilla, so spoilers dwell below:
The movie was very, very silly. I could rant endlessly about how stupid the US military was in pretty much all of its behavior, but whatever. Instead, just two major self-centered points:
1. Where is the International Studies Association going have its 2020 convention? Godzilla walked right through the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki, doing much damage to the entire property with his mini-tsunami entrance. The various APSA's and ISA's in San Francisco are likely to be re-located as well, but we are used to that, given the usual union challenges.
2. When the US Navy showed up after Mothra took off from Japan, we clearly hear someone say "NATO is taking over" from the Monarch company (yes, as in butterfly even though Mothra is ... a moth). Since this all takes place this year and NATO membership processes take a few years and the moves towards a global NATO were already going nowhere before Ukraine, what the hell is NATO doing in Japan? The US has a bilateral defense agreement with Japan which almost certainly covers reacting to monster attacks. So, why invoke NATO, which stands for North ATLANTIC Treaty Organization? Mucho confused on that one.
Not the best movie of the spring/summer but entertaining.
