I Cannot Quit You (Lost, that is)

My family is looking forward to the 12 minutes of the Hurley and Ben show.  For a taste:

Lost Again?!

My daughter wanted to watch the first five seasons of Lost after having watched only the last one.  I, of course, went along with this.  I am not going to post commentaries on each episode as we go along, but a few thoughts will pop up along the way:

• Ghost Walt in season 2 cannot be the Man in Black since Walt is not dead, unless MIB lied in the big conversation with Jack.  During the final season, I began to view Ghost Walt as MIB as part of his ploy to turn Sayid to the dark side by setting up Shannon to be killed.  But again, Walt was not dead, just missing.
• Speaking of hallucinations, Kate and Sawyer saw Kate's horse and she touched it.  Sure, the horse could have been MIB, but it seems hard to understand how that would have made sense as part of any MIB scheme.
• Smokey makes noise at times and not at others.  Interesting.
• People seem to remember Jack as being very annoying, but in the second season, he was ok.  The vote for most annoying character in the series, and, definitely in the second season should go to Michael.  His obsession with his son is already way over the top, endangering everyone else long before he starts shooting at Tailies.
• Speaking of which, it is fun to see how little game Hurley has when first interacting with Libby. She was very much interested in him, but he had no clue.  Hurley just rocks!

Anyhow, more random thoughts as we proceed.  Season one was so much fun--I had few thoughts on it as it was just a great ride the second time.

Never Too Late for More Lost Stuff

Second, I am re-watching the series as my daughter wants to see the first five seasons, having only watched the last one.  Yeah, pretty strange, but if you can figure out teenagers, let me know.  Anyhow, it is fun to see some themes emerge, even if it is still pretty clear that the writers really do not quite know where they are going yet.  Watching the episode at the start of Season 2 where John Locke is struggling with his father obsession/anger-management issues, and his sweetie, Helen, emphasizes the issues of "letting go" and "asking for help from the community."  So, either this was something very much intended or perhaps the writers went back to the show's past to figure out the themes that they would carry forward, especially in the last season--redemption through community and letting go.

So, yes, I am now playing the game in watching season 2 (we buzzed through season 1 very quickly) of: how does this fit the conclusion/did Damon and Carlton have a clue at point x about how this would end?  Fun stuff.

Spoilers?  No.  As everyone who is reading this now is caught up.   If not, go away.

Anyhow, some last thoughts, inspired by the semi-finally Totally Lost episode. 

I like the idea of a scavenger hunt where Desmond and perhaps other folks/devices may be the items on the list of things to find.  I also like the Wizard of Oz kind of idea that folks will get picked up along the way.  I am sorry Doc and Dan didn't see the obvious Star Wars parallel--that in each movie, especially the last one, it is about out favorite characters uniting again after completely separate journeys--on Tatooine to free Han and then on and near Death Star 2.

I have less of a problem with the most recent sudden deaths. Ilana paralleled Artz nicely, for instance.  I don't mind Zoe getting killed as she was never more than a tertiary character.  I do wonder about Richard and Frank, of course. 

I do want the key mysteries solved and some of the questions answered--but only the important ones that should be integral to the story.

Betting on Lost?

Ok, we are reaching the end.  So, I wonder if Vegas sports books have bets on the show?  Probably not since inside information would be most problematic.  So, it must be our job to set the lines for tomorrow night's episode

Ending Lost: Favorite Scenes

Rather than getting into favorite episodes, I have been pondering what are my favorite scenes/sequences in the six year run of the show.  Why?  Because I have not blogged about Lost for at least a few hours.

Anyhow, here I go:
1) The first plane crash (there have been how many?  The FAA should consider regulating the airspace over the Island if it could find it).  It was simply stunning.  Very expensive with all of the dollars put on the screen.  Just a brilliant way to start a series (even if you do not really know where it is going to go). 


A couple of key things:

• that we see Jack and his eye opening followed by Vincent!  If they are paralleling first and las season, Vincent will arise again!
• takes a while for Jack to start moving, but then goes to Claire second, who is contracting;
• that Boone is immediately useless;
• that Rose needs CPR;
• that we see Jin but not Sun;

Once I saw this first scene, they pretty much had me for six or eight seasons.

2) This discussion of time travel.  Just brilliant.


I love a good Back to the Future reference.

3) Hurley saving the day with the Scooby van.
